This is what #IndustrialAgriculture<\/span><\/a> does to the land.
First picture taken 21 Feb 2024 and the second one today. We had a lot of rain and the water hasn't drained for month.
In the 20 years we've lived here, the field was planted with maize for anaerobic digesters for more than 10 years - 8 or 9 years in a row!
The farmer who did most of the damage told me about the horrors of maize production (i.e. compaction and erosion) - a couple of years before he sold up his dairy business and went into maize for digesters...

A new tool for the #marketgarden<\/span><\/a> made mostly from workshop scraps: A wide #rake<\/span><\/a> to mark drills for #sowing<\/span><\/a> and #planting<\/span><\/a>.
Originally, I wanted to use the metal rake in the first picture for this, but the angle of the pins was just not right.<\/p>

So I made one from two pieces of batten, a handle bought (as a hoe) from a discounter for 7\u20ac, some wood dowels and a bit of hose.<\/p>

My beds are 80cm wide so the distance between the outer pins is 70cm. This way, I have 5cm to the edges on each side.
There is a total of nine pins. Depending on the number of pieces of hose I put on, I can mark up to nine rows on the bed in one go.
The bed has to be flat though, but here the metal rake comes handy.<\/p>

7\u20ac and 1 1\/4h work - I'm pretty chuffed.<\/p>

Bed preparation for the new season in the #NoDig<\/span><\/a> #VegPatch<\/span><\/a> <\/p>

I harvested the last parsnips, celeriac and carrots, raked the beds over and covered with a few cm of green waste compost from the council (certified for organic horticulture).<\/p>

The new miditunnel was planted with garlic, lettuce, peashoots and pak choi.
Because the tunnel is made really cheaply, I wanted to call it cheap tunnel. My wife insisted that I should use the term "miditunnel" instead as it is in size between my tunnel greenhouse and last years minitunnels.<\/p>

The original design of the tunnel wouldn't last a week in our climate. So I re-enforced the construction massively. Mostly I used stuff from last year's minitunnel. <\/p>

Need to get a few things more ready as I have to get some minor surgery done this week. After that, there may be a #gardening<\/span><\/a> pause for a few days or weeks. \u2639\ufe0f<\/p><\/div>

Look at this pretty couple that came to breakfast today!
They had a drink from the pond and picked some seeds from the wildflower meadow before something scared them away.<\/p>

Quality of the photos is poor since taken through one layer of security glass door and triple glazing windows.<\/p>

In Germany there is some release of #pheasant<\/span><\/a> s by hunters, but by far not to the extend as in the UK. I.e. I don't know about any releases in our area.<\/p>

Finally!
The council of my home town has erected "swap huts" at their recycling centres.
So far it was illegal and a criminal offence to take something out of the containers. While this still will be the case, users can drop off and take usable stuff at the huts.

The cold smoker is on so I smoked some gouda cheese and some sea salt.
After smoking, the cheese has to mature for a few days. Straight from the smoke it's disgusting. I use vacuum bags for that. I cut the bags much larger than needed so I can reuse them several times.<\/p>

The salt is a first for me. It's in a bag and was smoked for ~8 hours. My wife and I reckon it can have another go tomorrow.<\/p>

These are Australian #WickingBeds<\/span><\/a> "en miniature".
The top of the water bottles is cut off and turned into the bottom. The cap gets some holes. The soil sucks up the water by capillary action.<\/p>

Two bottles hold lettuces "Amerikanischer Brauner" and "Venezianer". The third bottle was sown with seed of a hybrid of the two. These seeds show the strongest germination. All seeds were collected in our garden.<\/p>

The final numbers for the #MarketGarden<\/span><\/a> for 2023 are in.
Although I don't run it as a commercial operation, with about 800 kg from 16 beds, it produced a yield per hectare of more than 63 t\/ha of #veg<\/span><\/a>. The mean for all German veg producers (2015-2022) was about 30t\/ha.
Since I could easily increase the production by at least 50%, that is a great argument for #NoDig<\/span><\/a> #gardening<\/span><\/a> as all that is done on #compost<\/span><\/a> only - no fertilizers, no pesticides.
It took about 250 hours. As I don't measure the harvest of our friends, who provide the land, the total yield from the market garden is about 1.6t+.

After two nights with -13\/14\u00b0C, the last few days were a bit warmer (i.e. -5 to -1\u00b0C).
The snow is heavy and perfect snowman material. The weight was to much for the roof of the chicken run though. It collapsed. It happened at night so there were no casualties.
As the ground has been frozen for about a fortnight now, I was too late to get the last beetroot, carrots and potatoes out of the ground.
Unfortunately, the lovely winter weather and snow cover will not stay until Christmas as the forecast says, some warmer (1-5\u00b0C) weather with rain is ahead.<\/p><\/div>

Yesterday was the first decent day after galeforce winds and the worst flood of the baltic sea around here in +100yrs.
When I came to the market garden, the #SweetPotato<\/span><\/a> had it. We didn't have frost, yet, but the foliage was wilted.
The total yield from 6.4m2 was only 1.9kg tubers. They were just an underplanting of tomatoes though (which failed completely this year due to blight).
The sweet potatoes in the minitunnel (3.2 m2) still look ok.

Today saw the start of my #comfrey<\/span><\/a> "liquefier" project.
Most of the parts were lying around somewhere except 2 brackets for mounting the device on the wall and the caps.
A PVC pipe DN110 with caps fits exactly into a DN125.
So the DN110 pressing cylinder will compress the comfrey in the DN125 pipe and eventually liquid will drop out.
Now the glue has to set before the device is mounted to the wall of the shed and filled with comfrey.

The weather forecast says more wet, unstable weather ahead for coming fortnight. I decided to cut my losses on the runner beans and cleared the bed on a day off. Quite a few were already rotten.

- creamy cauli curry sauce

For dinner, my wife treated me with a very special quiche.
In the filling are #GarlicFlowers<\/span><\/a> and fresh #tarragon<\/span><\/a> shoots. The tarragon is not chopped up, so you get nice bursts of aniseed in the mouth with every other fork.
There is usually just this one shot at a good recipe with the garlic flowers a year. This was perfection (which might not be reflected in my photo).\ud83d\ude09

Lots of things to appreciate and to be done - but I'm mostly in bed with flu for the 5th day in a row, probably still a few days to go. Short forays out and then back again.
The backlog of veg from the pipeline to be planted is getting bigger (as are the plants...).

After a clean-up of another garden area, I've had some potted up ferns standing around near the garden shed for years.
So today, one of them was made to a fern kokedama or a #MossBall<\/span><\/a>.
Since we don't have any lawn left, the bit of moss I could find in the wildflower meadow locks a bit scruffy. That made for a scruffy kokedama. The root ball of the fern is covered in moss which is hold in place by some string.
For the next one, I'll get some nicer moss!

Wicking beds are very water efficient and can support plants for a sustained period without the need of watering.
My two new wicking beds are my insurance policy for the summer holiday when our teenage daughter will do the watering. \ud83d\ude42

Super quick and better than Chinese takeaway!

Add some starch and water, the coarsely chopped greens of the radishes & chard, finely chopped #KaffirLime<\/span><\/a> leaves, ginger and garlic. Add cooked noodles. The finer mie noodles are better than these! Season with five spice, dark\/light soy sauce and sambal. Finish with some groundnut oil.
Adding ginger and garlic towards the end gives better, fresher aroma.

Had a lovely day in the sun at a car boot sale \/ plant exchange at a farm 2 villages (10km)* away.
Had lots of nice chats, sold a few surplus plants, met interesting people - but was completely exotic because I came by bicycle with a little trailer.
Sure, if it had been a commercial enterprise a proper stall and more plants would be necessary, but there were no commercial traders just locals.

Exciting 1st results of the #potato<\/span><\/a> trial:
Bed with slightly better developed plants (left) was planted 16 Apr directly into #compost<\/span><\/a>. The other was planted 31 October last year with tatties freshly harvested on another bed into compost. The bed received a new layer of compost of ~4cm in Dec.
All October tatties sprouted. Depth at planting 5-10cm.<\/p>

If the yield is comparable, the autumn planting at harvest will save me storage and time.<\/p>

Today, I made Mark II of my home-brew #compost<\/span><\/a> aerator. The idea was pinched from #GardeningAustralia<\/span><\/a> (as far as I can remember).
It is an old tomato spiral with two pieces of metal pipe as handles, bent in a vice.
Mark I had only 1 piece of pipe.
The electric compost sieve was a gift from friends, who didn't have a use for it. For me, it's a game changer. #Sowing<\/span><\/a> almost everything for the #MarketGarden<\/span><\/a> in module trays means, huge amounts of compost are needed this time of the year.<\/p><\/div>

I can't remember how often I've taken the shot of the palm house terrace - but it is a tradition for each visit.

My cabinet making days are long over, but I built myself a fixture for the production of wire arches for fleece tunnels.<\/p>

The trailer is about 3m long. So I just had to thread the wire into the clamps, and cut to the length of the trailer.<\/p>

3\/4h later: 40 arches for the beds in the market garden are done.<\/p>

The 5mm galvanised steel wire might be too soft for 3m arches - in our high winds. We'll see.<\/p><\/div>

Chillies, aubergines (eggplants) and bell peppers (capsicum) sown 15 Feb look fine.<\/p>

I use a stack of euroboxes on rollers to start e.g. onions in the warmth of the house. Once they germinate, they go under fleece to the cold greenhouse.

The mini polytunnel had its first test: 2 days gusts of 6-9 bft winds.
The cobblestones were thrown of the edges. An ad-hoc, middle-of-the-night solution with boards and heavier concrete blocks seems to do. <\/p>

Rotting wooden sides of the beds in the veg patch made a re-design necessary.
It was heartbreaking to destroy beds grown in years of nodig plus the last of the winter veg.
The work was getting ahead and I got nearly 2 tons of greenwaste compost from the council (8\u20ac !).
Nearly finished, we got snow and I'm stuck.
Anyway.
The new beds are all 1\/2 the size of the beds in the market garden. Now everything should be easier: calculation of needed plants\/seeds\/compost, use of fleece etc.<\/p><\/div>
